What can one country teach us about the way people, places and stories are connected?

A map of Türkiye opens a journey between southeastern Europe and western Asia. From the Bosphorus to Cappadocia, mountains, coasts, cities and farming regions invite questions about how geography and everyday life connect.

This printable Wonder Lesson begins with continents and peninsulas, then introduces Turkish words, food, architecture and sensory noticing. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal help children locate, look closely, record discoveries and create something inspired by the country’s varied places and traditions.

Made for learning together

Begin with a map, a word or a pattern and let one discovery lead to another. The Parent Guide offers context and activity ideas while the journal gives children space to locate, notice, write, draw and remember in their own way.

You do not need to cover the whole country in one sitting. Choose sensory and food activities that suit your family, or explore through pictures and conversation; an adult should choose ingredients and check allergies and sensitivities.

The free companion resources introduce the continents, Türkiye and Cappadocia’s volcanic valleys from a hot-air balloon. Share The Hungry Coat, practise Turkish numbers, watch children compare snacks and revisit geography and culture with the quiz.

Follow questions into cave rooms, changing city names, carpets, tea glasses and İznik tiles. These are starting points for a varied, living country rather than a suggestion that one city, dish or tradition represents everyone.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the maps, pictures and questions that suit your child, helping with reading, writing and vocabulary where useful. Adapt movement and sensory activities to each child’s needs.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a five-page Parent Guide and a three-page Wonder Companion Journal, eight pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book, food or craft kit.

Do I need a printer?

Printing provides the journal’s map, flag, picture-response and reflection spaces. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own paper or notebook if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed completion time. Begin with one place, word or activity and return over several days if you wish. You do not need to use every video or extension.

Do I need any special materials?

Begin with pencils, colouring materials and a map or globe. The guide suggests cushions or towels for a continent game and building bricks for a peninsula model; these can be adapted. Optional spice mixing uses kitchen ingredients selected by an adult, with allergy checks and supervised smelling or tasting.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, read-aloud, quiz and further prompts are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Why do some resources say Turkey and others Türkiye?

Türkiye is the country’s official English name. Some older English-language books and videos use Turkey, so both names appear in the original resources. Use this as a chance to notice how names and languages can change without treating the country as a single culture or tradition.
