Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might be wondering about The Wonder Curriculum, our lessons and the Wonder Family, gathered in one place.

Getting started

New to The Wonder Curriculum? Start here.

What is The Wonder Curriculum?

A family-style home education curriculum built around wonder. Each adventure follows one big question, weaving nature, science, art, history and beautiful literature together, so learning joins up naturally instead of being taught in separate boxes.

Do I need teaching experience?

Not at all. Every lesson comes with a Parent Guide that walks you through the story, the aims and what you'll need, so you can explore alongside your child rather than stand at the front of a classroom.

What ages is it for?

It's designed for all ages to use together. One adventure stretches to meet each child, so a five-year-old and a twelve-year-old can explore the same page and each find their own depth.

Can I use it with several children at once?

Yes, that's exactly what it was made for. Teresa created it while home educating children of different ages at the same time, so the whole family can learn side by side from one adventure.

Do I have to follow it in order, or to a timetable?

No. There's no set day and no set order. Pick an adventure up when a question strikes and set it down when the day calls you elsewhere. Spend an afternoon on it or a whole week.

Home educating

Thinking about home education, or just starting out? The questions families ask us most.

Is it legal to home educate in the UK?

Yes. Home education is completely legal across the UK. The law asks that your child receives an efficient, full-time education suited to their age, ability and aptitude, “either by regular attendance at school or otherwise”. Home education is the “otherwise”.

I'm thinking about home educating. Where do I begin?

Our calm, practical guides walk you through the first steps, from the law in the UK to choosing a curriculum and common myths about home education.

How do I take my child out of school?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you write a short letter to the head teacher saying you're withdrawing your child to educate them at home. It's a notification, not a request. In Scotland, you'll need your council's consent first if your child attends a state school, and the same applies anywhere if they attend a special school arranged by the local authority. If your child has never been to school, you can simply begin.

Do I have to follow the National Curriculum at home?

Home educating families in the UK don't have to follow the National Curriculum. We explain what the law asks of you, and what it doesn't, in our guide.

Do I need to be a qualified teacher?

No. UK law doesn't ask for any teaching qualification. Most home-educating parents learn alongside their children, and every Wonder lesson comes with a Parent Guide so you never have to plan from scratch.

How many hours a day should we spend on learning?

There are no set hours. Because learning at home is one-to-one, it's far more efficient than a classroom, and many families find two to four hours of focused activity is plenty for a school-age child, woven around reading, conversation, outdoor time and everyday life.

What about socialising?

Home-educated children usually spend time with a much wider range of ages than a classroom allows: siblings, home-ed groups, co-ops, clubs and trips. Search for “[your county] home education” to find local meet-ups, forest days and groups.

Will the local authority check on us?

Your local authority may make informal enquiries about the education you're providing, which is normal. Many families simply send a short written summary of how their child learns. Registration rules are changing, with new local registers of children not in school being introduced, so do check the current position on gov.uk.

How do I choose a home education curriculum?

Most families find their approach first, from structured and timetabled to child-led, then choose resources to fit. The Wonder Curriculum is wonder-led: each adventure follows one big question across nature, science, art, history and literature, so the whole family can learn together.

Curriculums

About the printed Wonder Curriculum volumes, delivery and returns.

What's in the Volume One Family Set?

Twenty-five wonder-led adventures, with a Parent Guide and one children's journal. The journal becomes a keepsake of everything your child noticed, asked and discovered.

Can I buy extra journals for siblings?

Yes. When you buy the Volume One Family Set, each extra sibling journal is £7 off. Add the Family Set to your basket and the sibling discount is applied automatically.

Can I see inside the journal before I buy?

Yes. You can look through pages of the children's journal on its own page.

How much is delivery, and how long does it take?

Delivery is free on all UK orders of the Family Set. We send every order by registered post, and it takes 3–5 days to arrive. If you're ordering from outside the UK, you'll see the shipping cost in your basket before you pay.

Can I return the printed books?

Yes. If you change your mind, let us know within 14 days of your order arriving, then send the books back within 14 days of telling us. Once they're back with us, we'll refund you in full within 14 days, to the card you paid with. Return postage is yours to pay, unless the books are damaged or faulty.

You're welcome to look through the books, but please keep them unused. If the journal has been written in or the books are damaged, we may reduce the refund to reflect that.

What if my books arrive damaged?

We're so sorry if that happens. Please get in touch with a photo of the damage and we'll send a replacement or refund you in full, and we'll cover the return postage.

Will there be more volumes?

Yes. Volume One is where The Wonder Curriculum begins, and it's the first of several volumes to come. Join the Wonder Family to hear when the next one is ready.
