What can animal poo tell us about the creatures that left it behind?

A funny subject can open a surprisingly useful window into nature. Animal poo comes in different shapes and sizes, and the clues it holds can help us think about an animal’s diet, habitat and movements.

This printable Wonder Lesson turns giggles into careful observation, nature vocabulary, writing and playful making. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal help families compare safe pictures, model pretend scat with playdough and record discoveries without handling real droppings.

Made for learning together

Share the funny questions, compare clues and model shapes together. The Parent Guide supports the conversation and playdough activity, while the journal gives children space to practise words and record what they notice.

Use photographs or drawings rather than handling real droppings, and wash hands after outdoor exploration. There is no need to solve every mystery: one clue and a good question can be enough to begin thinking like a nature detective.

The free companion resources include two videos about animal droppings and digestion, a Poo in the Zoo read-aloud and a linked Story of the Little Mole story.

Match safe animal clues, sort diets and draw the digestion journey. Follow the rabbit holes into how dung beetles, fungi and microbes recycle waste, then wonder what poo can reveal about an animal’s life.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the vocabulary, making and observation activities that suit your child, helping with reading and writing where useful. Younger children can talk, match pictures and model shapes while others may enjoy detailed field notes.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a three-page Parent Guide and a three-page Wonder Companion Journal, six pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book or playdough kit.

Do I need a printer?

Printing gives children spaces to write nature words, draw clues and record observations. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own paper or notebook for responses if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed completion time. Explore one story, vocabulary activity or clue at a time, or return over several days. You do not need to finish every page.

Do I need any special materials?

Use pencils, paper and safe photographs or drawings of animal clues. Playdough is optional; use a suitable ready-made dough or the supplied recipe. Check ingredients for allergies, keep dough out of mouths and have an adult handle any heated preparation before it cools for play.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, story resources and further activities are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Will children need to touch real animal poo?

No. Use photographs, drawings and pretend playdough shapes. If you notice real droppings outdoors, observe from a safe distance with an adult rather than touching or collecting them, and wash hands after outdoor exploration.
