Peru’s Pacific coastal desert, Andes mountains and terraces, high grasslands with vicuñas and Amazon forestDigital download

How can one country stretch from a Pacific coast across the Andes and into the Amazon?

Peru’s landscapes connect a dry Pacific coast, high Andean valleys and tropical Amazon forest. Its modern cities, rural communities and many cultures and languages offer different ways to ask how geography, history and daily life meet.

This printable Wonder Lesson invites children to locate Peru, explore Machu Picchu, meet remarkable animals and notice food, craft and textiles. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal bring maps, picture prompts, reflection and a sapo-game design into a shared journey of discovery.

A three-page Wonder Companion Journal with map and country facts, image-based prompts, reflection, sapo rules and a design-your-own-board space

Made for learning together

Map the regions, notice woven patterns and explore how an animal or crop connects with a landscape. The Parent Guide supports the conversation while the journal gives children spaces to record facts, respond to pictures and share something they would like to learn next.

Use the sapo-game design to bring creativity and counting into the journey if you wish. Keep Peru’s living, varied communities in view alongside ancient sites, and choose food or craft extensions that suit your family rather than trying to do everything.

The free companion resources include two country introductions and a video about vicuña fibre and textile traditions. Share Up and Down the Andes, follow a festival journey towards Cusco and revisit Peru with the quiz.

Explore questions about stonework, grass bridges, altitude and the Amazon watershed. The cuy food-culture video discusses—and may show—a guinea pig being prepared as food, so an adult should preview it and skip it if it would upset their child.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the maps, pictures and questions that suit your child, helping with reading, writing and making where useful. An adult should preview videos, particularly the food-culture resource.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a four-page Parent Guide and a three-page Wonder Companion Journal, seven pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book, craft kit or finished sapo board.

Do I need a printer?

Printing provides the journal’s map, picture-response, drawing and reflection spaces. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own paper or notebook if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed completion time. Explore one region, animal or activity at a time, or return across several days. You do not need to watch every video or try every extension.

Do I need any special materials?

Begin with pencils, colouring materials and a map or globe. An optional sapo-style model can use a box and suitable counters, with adult help for cutting and small pieces. Food and natural-dye extensions are optional; check allergies and let an adult handle heat, sharp tools and preparation.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, read-aloud, quiz and further prompts are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Do we have to watch the guinea-pig food video?

No. An adult should preview it because children who know guinea pigs as pets may find it upsetting. You can skip it and still explore the maps, animals, textiles, festival story and other resources. Discuss differences in food traditions respectfully without asking a child to ignore their feelings.
