How does life take shape across a country of wide grasslands, mountains and desert?

Mongolia lies between Russia and China, with a modern capital and vast rural landscapes. Its steppe, mountains, Gobi and dramatic seasons invite questions about how people travel, build homes and care for animals in different conditions.

This printable Wonder Lesson brings maps, gers, horses, wildlife and living traditions into a shared exploration. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal help families locate the country, discover a portable home’s design and ask how geography connects with everyday life without imagining every family lives in the same way.

Two printable PDFs delivered as a digital download, seven illustrated pages in total

A four-page Parent Guide with a location map, language, geography and questions about life on the steppe

Introductions to portable gers, horses and nomadic traditions

Eagle-hunter, Mongolian tea and shagai-game information, with reflection and further-resource prompts

A three-page Wonder Companion Journal with maps, country facts and vocabulary, eagle and horse prompts, steppe-animal exploration, ger design and reflection

A free companion resource page with country videos, a folktale, a ger tour, nomadic-life and tea videos, a quiz and further questions

A parent and children mapping Mongolia, building a ger model and exploring animal cards

Made for learning together

Mark Mongolia on a map, compare landscapes and notice how the parts of a ger work together. The Parent Guide supports the questions while the journal gives children space to record facts, draw a home design and reflect on what surprised them.

Use current Mongolian sources alongside traditional practices so children see a living, varied country. A drawing, simple model or conversation about an animal can be enough to begin; choose food and further videos only if they suit your family.

The free companion resources introduce children in Mongolia, quick country facts and the structure of a ger. Share The Khan’s Daughter folktale, learn about savoury milk tea and revisit the country with the Kahoot.

A documentary visits Kazakh nomadic families in western Mongolia and includes eagle hunting, so an adult should preview it. Follow questions into moving a home, hardy horses, Gobi camels and dramatic seasons, then consider how your own routines might change.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the maps, animal questions and design activities that suit your child, helping with reading and writing where useful. An adult should preview the folktale and documentary before sharing.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a four-page Parent Guide and a three-page Wonder Companion Journal, seven pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book, model or game kit.

Do I need a printer?

Printing provides the journal’s map, fact-file, design and reflection spaces. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own paper or notebook for responses if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed completion time. Explore one map, home design or animal at a time, or return over several days. You do not need to watch every video or try every extension.

Do I need any special materials?

Begin with pencils, colouring materials and a map. A model can use simple craft materials, but drawing a ger is enough. Milk-tea preparation is optional; check ingredients for allergies and let an adult handle heating and hot liquids. The lesson does not require real anklebones or hunting equipment.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, read-aloud, quiz and further prompts are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Does the lesson include hunting scenes?

The nomadic-life documentary includes eagle hunting and may not suit every child. Preview it and skip it if needed; you can still explore the maps, ger design, horses, folktale and other resources. Keep the practice tied to the specific communities shown rather than assuming it represents all Mongolian families.
