What can the shape of a map reveal about a country full of mountains, islands, cities and stories?

Italy stretches from snowy Alpine mountains towards the Mediterranean, with cities, coastlines and islands offering different ways to explore. A map can lead to a canal in Venice, an ancient story in Rome or a question about a leaning tower.

This printable Wonder Lesson brings geography together with language, food, landmarks and culture. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal help families locate Italy, notice connections between place and daily life, and share stories such as Romulus and Remus and Pizza for the Queen.

A parent and children mapping Italy, making pizza and exploring landmark cards

Made for learning together

Mark the map, practise a few Italian words and notice how food and stories connect to place. The Parent Guide supports the conversation while the journal offers spaces to draw, record facts and imagine what you would like to discover.

You can make a simple pizza or tricolour snack if it suits your family, but food preparation is optional. Begin with one city, landmark or question, and let curiosity choose the next stop rather than trying to cover the whole country at once.

Continue exploring online

The free companion resources offer an Italy introduction, a gondola journey through Venice and a video about Pisa’s leaning tower. Share Pizza for the Queen, explore the legend of Rome and choose between two quizzes for different levels of challenge.

Follow questions into Naples, Pompeii, Venice and Renaissance art, then consider how landscape and history shape life today. Preview the Romulus and Remus video for younger or sensitive children: the legend includes abandonment, threats and a brother’s death.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the maps, stories and questions that suit your child, helping with reading and writing where useful. The companion page offers quizzes at different levels, and an adult should preview sensitive stories.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a four-page Parent Guide and a three-page Wonder Companion Journal, seven pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book, food or travel kit.

Do I need a printer?

Printing provides the journal’s map, fact-file, drawing and reflection spaces. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own paper or notebook for responses if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed completion time. Explore one map, city or activity at a time, or return across several days. You do not need to use every video or extension.

Do I need any special materials?

Begin with pencils, colouring materials and a map or globe. Food activities are optional; check ingredients for allergies and let an adult handle knives, heat and ovens. You can explore the flag and foods through pictures without preparing a snack.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, read-aloud, quizzes and further prompts are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Are the stories suitable for every child?

An adult should preview the Romulus and Remus legend because it includes upsetting events. Treat it as a founding legend rather than a verified account of Rome’s beginnings, and choose a gentler map, landmark or food activity if that suits your child better.
