Child scientist exploring expectation, brain signals and evidenceDigital download

Can expectation change what we notice or feel?

What we expect can influence how an experience feels, but that does not mean belief cures illness or replaces treatment. Placebo research asks careful questions about expectation, context and the brain-body connection, using evidence to distinguish those effects from a treatment’s active ingredients.

This printable Wonder Lesson introduces the story of Franz Mesmer and Benjamin Franklin’s investigation. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal invite families to make predictions, record observations and question what a test can really show through discussion and an optional ordinary-drinks activity.

The Placebo Effect Wonder Companion Journal

What children will explore

  • What a placebo is and why researchers use placebos
  • How expectations may influence what people notice or feel
  • Franz Mesmer, Benjamin Franklin and an early controlled investigation
  • Predictions, observations, comparisons and the importance of fair tests
  • The difference between scientific evidence and pseudoscience
  • Questions about the brain-body connection and the limits of a conclusion

What’s included

Two printable PDFs delivered as a digital download, six illustrated pages in total

A four-page Parent Guide introducing placebos and questions about the brain and body

The story of Mesmer and Franklin’s investigation, with a Mesmerized read-aloud connection

An optional family prediction-and-observation activity comparing ordinary drinks, plus discussion and continued-learning prompts

A two-page Wonder Companion Journal with predictions, activity steps, a results table, reflection, Mesmer and Franklin profiles and evidence questions

A free companion resource page with two explanatory videos, a read-aloud, a story quiz and fair-testing and perception prompts

A parent and children comparing predictions and results in a safe drinks experiment

Made for learning together

Make a prediction, describe what you notice and compare observations before deciding what they mean. The Parent Guide supports the conversation while the journal gives children space to record results and ask what evidence would make a claim stronger.

Treat the drinks activity as a starting point for discussion, not proof of a placebo response: different ingredients, practice and the order of a test can all affect results. An adult should preview it, keep participation voluntary and use only ordinary allergy-safe drinks; never use medicine or make claims about treating illness.

A tablet showing videos about the brain, optical illusions, testing and Benjamin Franklin

Continue exploring online

The free companion resources offer two videos about placebo science, a Mesmerized read-aloud and a Kahoot about Franklin’s investigation. Sort predictions, observations and conclusions to practise distinguishing expectation from evidence.

Design a pretend fair test without swallowing anything, explore an optical illusion and ask what scientists still need to know when someone reports feeling better. These are learning questions, not instructions to test or change medical treatment.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the story, vocabulary and evidence questions that suit your child, helping with reading, writing and abstract ideas where useful. An adult should preview the optional activity and guide the discussion.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a four-page Parent Guide and a two-page Wonder Companion Journal, six pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book or experiment kit.

Do I need a printer?

Printing provides the journal spaces for predictions, observations, results and reflection. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own paper or notebook if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed overall completion time. The supplied drinks activity includes waiting between observations; you can instead focus on the story, evidence questions or a pretend test. Explore one part at a time rather than completing everything in one sitting.

Do I need any special materials?

Begin with pencils, paper and the lesson files. The optional activity uses two cups or bottles, ordinary drinks, a timer and observation notes. Check ingredients for allergies, avoid unsuitable drinks and let an adult supervise. You can skip drinking entirely and discuss how to design a pretend study.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, read-aloud, quiz and further prompts are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Does the activity prove the placebo effect or involve real medicine?

No. The supplied activity compares ordinary drinks, so ingredients, practice and test order may affect the result; it cannot isolate or prove a placebo effect. Keep participation voluntary and never mislead children about health or medicine. Do not test, take, stop or alter any medicine or treatment for this lesson; health decisions belong with a qualified healthcare professional.
