What happens when a scientist replaces frightening stories with curious questions and evidence?

Eugenie Clark followed a childhood fascination with fish into a life of marine science. Her curiosity, careful observations and shark research challenged familiar assumptions about ocean animals.

This printable Wonder Lesson invites children to explore her story, make predictions and look closely at shark anatomy. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal bring together courage, evidence and discovery as families ask what a scientist might notice beneath the surface.

A parent and children studying shark anatomy and comparing fears with facts

Made for learning together

Talk about what feels frightening, make a prediction, then look for evidence together. The Parent Guide supports the conversation while the journal gives children space to label a shark and record new questions like marine biologists.

There is no need to rush past a child’s feelings or meet a shark in person. Begin with a picture, a story or one body part, and let careful observation open the next question at a comfortable pace.

The free companion resources include three videos introducing Eugenie Clark and her work, a Shark Lady read-aloud and two Kahoots about sharks and Jess Keating’s book. The fuller memorial tribute is best for older children or shared viewing.

Design a pretend shark study without disturbing wildlife, investigate how gills, fins, skin and senses help sharks live in the ocean, then wonder what becomes possible when we study an animal we once feared.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a three-page Parent Guide and a three-page Wonder Companion Journal, six pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book or science kit.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, read-aloud, quizzes and further exploration are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.
