How does your brain help you think, feel, remember and learn?

Your brain helps you do so many things, from remembering a familiar face to trying something you have never done before. Our Amazing Brain invites children to explore this busy part of themselves and begin making sense of some of its different jobs.

Read and wonder together, try an experiment or spend time with a Journal activity. Follow the parts that spark your child's curiosity, with room to pause, talk and come back another day.

What children will explore

  • Some of the everyday jobs the brain helps us do.
  • Three brain areas introduced in the lesson: the prefrontal cortex, amygdala and hippocampus.
  • How different situations connect with thinking, feelings and memory.
  • Why the brain needs protection.
  • How an egg-and-water experiment can help us think about cushioning.
  • Neuroplasticity and the role of practice, explored through playdough and reflection on learning.

What’s included

Two printable PDFs supplied as a digital download, with 7 pages in total.

A 4-page Parent Guide introducing brain functions and three brain areas.

Guidance for an egg-and-water cushioning experiment and a playdough exploration of practice and neuroplasticity.

Made for learning together

You do not need to have all the answers before you begin. Read the Parent Guide together or use it to support your conversations, leaving space for your child's questions and observations.

Choose an activity that feels inviting and take it at your own pace. The Journal offers places to make connections and reflect, while shared discussion can help you notice what your child finds most interesting.

A watercolour discovery table with brain drawings on a tablet and in open sketchbooks, inviting further reading and watching.

The companion resources bring together StoryBots and SciShow Kids videos, the My Brain Books series, Your Fantastic Elastic Brain and a linked Kahoot quiz. There is also an invitation to notice how practice feels in everyday life. These resources are free to explore with or without the paid lesson PDFs; an adult can help choose what suits your family.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

Families can explore together, with an adult reading, discussing and adapting the activities to their child's interests and confidence. Choose the parts that feel suitable rather than expecting every child to use the lesson in the same way.

What exactly will I receive?

Your lesson will be available to download as soon as you complete your purchase. You’ll receive two printable PDFs with seven pages in total: a four-page adult guide with background information and activity instructions, plus a three-page journal with activities for matching brain areas, exploring how the brain is protected, and reflecting on learning and practice. This is a digital download; no physical item will be posted.

Do I need a printer?

The PDFs are printable, and printing the Journal gives children space to complete its activities. You can read the Parent Guide on screen and talk through the ideas together.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no need to complete everything in one sitting. You can explore one idea or activity at a time, pause for questions and return when you are ready.

Do I need any special materials?

The activities use an egg, water and a suitable container for the cushioning experiment, and playdough for the practice exploration. Read the Parent Guide before setting up. An adult should supervise the egg experiment, handle any broken egg or shell and help with handwashing and cleaning afterwards.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The companion videos, book links, quiz link and follow-on prompts can be explored without buying the lesson. The two purchased lesson PDFs are separate; linked books are not included in the download.
