What happens when art, science and curiosity are allowed to grow together?

Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, engineer, observer and polymath who filled notebooks with sketches and questions. He looked closely at faces, bodies, birds, water and machines, bringing art and science together.

This printable Wonder Lesson invites children to study the Mona Lisa, explore notebook ideas, measure human proportions, sketch an invention and observe nature like Leonardo. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal support a journey from looking carefully to asking a question and imagining something new.

What children will explore

  • Leonardo’s life and many areas of interest
  • The Mona Lisa and the mystery of her expression
  • How notebooks can hold questions, observations and designs
  • Ideas about flight, machines, anatomy and movement
  • Human proportion and the Vitruvian Man
  • How careful observation can lead to invention

What’s included

Two printable PDFs delivered as a digital download, eight illustrated pages in total

A four-page Parent Guide introducing Leonardo’s story and guided close-looking at the Mona Lisa

An introduction to his notebooks, areas of study and lasting influence

Activities involving proportion, a simple glider, nature observation and mirror writing

A four-page Wonder Companion Journal with a curious-mind profile, Mona Lisa observations, invention sketches, nature study and a curiosity promise

A free companion resource page with videos, a read-aloud, art-and-science activities, a proportion challenge, a quiz and further notebook ideas

A parent and two children sketching inventions and building a simple flying-machine model together

Made for learning together

Move between art, building and observation rather than treating them as separate subjects. The Parent Guide gives useful context while the journal encourages children to sketch, measure, question and invent.

You do not need to master every subject Leonardo explored. Begin with a face, a leaf, a paper glider or one interesting question, and let your child’s observations guide the next conversation.

The free companion resources include three introductory Leonardo videos, a read-aloud of Leonardo and the Flying Boy, an art-and-science activity video, a human-proportion investigation and a family Kahoot.

Make a curiosity notebook with questions, mirror writing, close observations and an invention of your own. A closing wonder question invites children to consider whether curiosity becomes more powerful when art and science work together.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the observation, drawing and making activities that suit your child, offering support with reading, writing and measuring where useful. The questions can be explored through conversation as well as written responses.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a four-page Parent Guide and a four-page Wonder Companion Journal, eight pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book, model or craft kit.

Do I need a printer?

Printing provides the journal spaces for drawings, observations and invention designs. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own notebook or sketchbook for responses if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed completion time. Explore one painting, notebook idea or activity at a time, or return over several days. You do not need to follow every path in one sitting.

Do I need any special materials?

Pencils, paper and simple materials you already have are enough to begin. A measuring tape or ruler helps with the proportion activity, and paper is used for the simple glider. Ask an adult to help with measuring and any cutting or making activities.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The videos, read-aloud, quiz and further exploration are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Do we need to be good at drawing or inventing?

No. The lesson values looking closely, asking questions and trying ideas rather than producing a perfect drawing or working machine. Children can sketch a small detail, label an imagined invention or share an observation in their own way.
