Can one person turn bare land into a living forest?

As a teenager living near the Brahmaputra River in Assam, Jadav Payeng began planting trees on damaged land. He continued for decades. What started with one person and a few seedlings became a thriving forest where wildlife could return.

This printable Wonder Lesson invites children to explore his story, the needs of forests and the ripple effect of patient conservation. Through reading, drawing and reflection, families can consider how small, repeated actions help care for a place.

A parent and two children planting and caring for a young tree together outdoors

Made for learning together

Read the story, notice the connections between trees and animals, then choose one practical act of care. The Parent Guide supports the discussion while the journal helps children map, imagine and reflect.

There is no need to plant a whole forest or finish every activity at once. Caring for an existing tree, returning to a small observation or making a thoughtful forest promise can be a gentle way to begin together.

The free companion resources include two videos about Jadav Payeng and forest life, a read-aloud of The Boy Who Grew a Forest, a tree-diary activity and a family Kahoot about forests and caring for the Earth.

Draw how bare ground might become a habitat over one year and fifty years, then wonder what could happen if each person cared for one small piece of the world for a very long time.

Questions about this lesson

Can’t find what you’re looking for? We’re always happy to help.

What ages is this lesson for?

There is no fixed age recommendation. Choose the questions and activities that suit your child, helping with reading and writing where useful. Younger children can talk about habitats and draw their ideas, while others may enjoy the longer reflections.

What exactly will I receive?

Two printable PDFs: a four-page Parent Guide and a three-page Wonder Companion Journal, seven pages in total. This is a digital download, not a physical book or planting kit.

Do I need a printer?

Printing gives children the journal spaces for facts, drawings, matching and a forest promise. You can read the guide on a screen and use your own notebook or paper for written responses and drawings if you prefer.

How long does the lesson take?

There is no fixed completion time. Explore the story and journal at your own pace. If you choose the optional tree diary, you can return to observations over a longer period as the tree changes.

Do I need any special materials?

Pencils, colouring materials and the printed journal or your own paper are enough for the core activities. A tree diary can use an existing tree; planting is optional. If planting, ask an adult to help choose a suitable local species and an appropriate place with permission.

Is the companion resource page really free?

Yes. The read-aloud, videos, quiz and further exploration are free to access with or without purchasing the printable lesson. The Parent Guide and Wonder Companion Journal are the paid download.

Do we have to plant a tree?

No. You can care for an existing tree, notice the wildlife it supports or draw a future forest instead. If you choose to plant, work with an adult and select a species and location that suit the local environment rather than introducing an unsuitable plant.
