Can one carefully created language help people understand one another?

What if people from different countries could share one language—not to replace their own, but to make meeting and understanding one another a little easier? This printable Wonder Lesson introduces children to L. L. Zamenhof and the story of Esperanto. Growing up among several language communities, Zamenhof saw how misunderstanding could deepen fear and division. He began imagining a simple international language that people might choose to learn together.

Through biography, listening, language play and reflection, children can explore not only how Esperanto works, but the bigger human question behind it: what helps us build bridges with people whose experiences are different from our own?

Dr Esperanto & the Language of Hope Wonder Companion Journal

What children will explore

  • Who L. L. Zamenhof was and why he created Esperanto
  • How a planned language differs from one that develops naturally
  • Simple Esperanto greetings and everyday words
  • How listening carefully can help unfamiliar sounds become meaningful
  • How languages can connect people while still preserving different cultures and identities
  • Why understanding also needs patience, kindness and curiosity

Made for learning together

There is no need to master a language or complete every activity. Read Zamenhof’s story, try the phrases that interest your child and pause wherever a larger question begins to unfold.

The Parent Guide supports the conversation, while the Companion Journal gives children room to match, imagine, draw and reflect. Both can be used in one sitting or returned to over several days.
